I purchased the beautiful gentlemen’s dresser (its called that because one of the drawers has a valet tray to hold cuff links or change) and it needed a lot of TLC. I started off by sanding down the top (it had layers apon layers of old paint and varnish that had yellowed tremendously). The body had a lot of paint drips, so I sanded the drips and then lightly sanded the rest to prepar for the new paint. I loved the white look, so I chose Annie Sloan Pure White chalk paint for this. After 3 coats of paint on the base, I did a light distressing. Then followed that up with Annie Sloan Clear Wax and buffed him to a satin finish. The new hardware really made a difference.
Now it was time to make the piece really stand out. I stained the top with Minwax Dark Walnut to bring the beautiful wood grain to life. While I had the stain out and ready to go, I decided to sand the inside of the drawers and give them a coat of stain as well. To finish it off, I top coated all the stained areas with Minwax Polyacrylic sealer in Satin so that it will be well protected and won’t yellow over time.
The only thing I didn’t do (which I normally would do) is fix the old paint drips by the valet tray, but I didn’t want to take the risk of loosening any of the original nails holding in the valet try…since that part, along with the maker’s mark, was my favorite feature of this dresser).
